Luna Truffles places great emphasis on the packaging of truffles to ensure they arrive fresh and in optimal condition at their destination, even on hot summer days. We use heat-insulating polystyrene boxes, which are equipped with special batteries with ice inside. These batteries ensure that a low temperature is maintained during transit, thus protecting the truffles from heat and keeping them fresh during transport. This way, you can be sure that your truffles will reach you in the best condition, regardless of the outside temperature conditions.
There are two effective methods of storing fresh truffles. The first method involves placing them in an airtight glass/plastic container on a generous layer of rice, rice that can later be used to make a risotto. Alternatively, you can put them in an airtight container and wrap them individually in a kitchen towel. It is important to change the wipe every 1-2 days with a new one to prevent moisture build-up.
We recommend keeping them in the refrigerator at a temperature between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius, for a maximum period of 5-7 days.
Fresh truffles can be stored in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Be sure to store them in an airtight container according to the methods mentioned to maintain their quality.
To get the most out of the flavor of fresh truffles, we recommend adding them to your dishes at the end, over the hot dish, so that the volatile oils from the truffles fuse with your dish. Avoid adding them to dishes that contain a lot of spices to avoid cover the subtle flavor of the truffles. They can be added to dishes such as pasta, risotto, eggs or meat dishes.
Fresh truffles can be frozen to keep them longer but you have to keep in mind that most of the flavor of truffles is lost by freezing. Before freezing them, clean and wash them off the soil. You can freeze them either whole or sliced, depending on your preference. Make sure to use them as soon as possible after thawing to maintain their quality.
Try to remember the appearance of the truffles from the moment you receive the package, using them as a reference. A quality fresh truffle should have a strong and distinctive flavor, be firm to the touch, and show no signs of mold or spoilage. If it softens and an unpleasant smell appears, we recommend that you stop consuming that truffle. If you are in doubt, however, you can send us photos of the truffle or truffles that you are not sure about whether or not they are still good for consumption, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
